Agreement between the Tartan Pro Tour and the Challenge Tour, The Tartan Pro Tour is a project strongly desired by Paul Lawrie to give an opportunity for growth to players, both professionals and amateurs. Exclusively based in Scotland, it saw the light of day in 2020, spread over six events, all played over the length of 36 holes.
Tartan Pro Tour, statements
In 2021 the calendar expanded to fourteen tournaments, as well as two special events (Match Play championship and Par 3 championship). The season that just ended was instead divided into 12 stages, with the Par 3 championship, single and team, as a corollary.
The 1999 Open Champion with the Tartan Pro Tour (managed directly by himself through the Five Stars Sports Agency) wanted to create a springboard to facilitate the journey towards the major Tours. And it is in this sense that the news, which appeared on Tuesday, of the agreement reached with the Challenge Tour represents a “huge step forward”, as Lawrie himself declared.
“Since we began during the 2020 pandemic, our goal has been to ensure gameplay and development opportunities to better prepare emerging players, both professional and amateur, to compete at the highest levels in our sport”.
Starting next season, which will consist of 13 tournaments played over a distance of 54 holes, with a cut after 36, the winner of the Order of Merit will earn the full Card for the 2024 Challenge Tour season. “By becoming part of the players journey to the Challenge Tour, I feel we have achieved our goal” “This new opportunity represents an additional incentive for all those players who aspire to get to play at a higher level”.
The Tartan Pro Tour thus joins the Alps Tour, the Pro Golf Tour and the Nordic Golf League as an access route to the second level European Tour, taking the place of the PGA EuroPro Tour, which after twenty years of history has closed its doors.
This is excellent news for European golf, which at this historic moment is squeezed between the PGA Tour on one side (despite the Strategic Alliance) and LIV Golf, which is creating an integrated system in the Middle and Far East, from ‘other.
