The university was founded in 1850 during Zachary Taylor’s brief presidency of the Society of Mary.

The university was fundamental when in 1913, during a great flood in the city of Dayton, it served as a shelter for many people. The Flyers, a member of NCAA Division I, are affiliated with the Atlantic 10 Conference. Basketball and American football are the major sports, home games are played at Welcome Stadium and indoors at the University of Dayton Arena.

Dayton has a decent tradition in the collegiate basketball scene, making 16 appearances in the post-season, and in the 1967 tournament it reached the national final only to be defeated by UCLA. But today it is also establishing itself in tennis.
